Go on a glacier walk on Sólheimajökull glacier and visit a natural blue ice cave.
On this tour, you visit the recently discovered Blue Ice Cave of Sólheimajökull Glacier. Located only 160 km from Reykjavík and just off the Ring Road, this is currently one of the most accessible ice cave tours here in Iceland!
You start the day at our Base Camp right next to Sólheimajökull Parking Lot, where you are fitted with glacier equipment and can enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee or tea. When you are ready, your expert guide will lead you to the tip of the 11 km long glacier tongue, where your adventure begins. The hike to the ice cave takes 1-1.5 hours each way, where you cross the stunning glacier landscape, with spectacular ice formations and crevasses, colored by the signature volcanic ash of Icelandic glaciers.
Once you get to the ice cave, you will have ample time to explore the cave, take pictures and study the area. Your guide will be happy to tell you all about the formation of the Icelandic ice caves, the geology, or the blue ice you will find in the cave.
After you have thoroughly explored the cave, you will hike back down to the Base Camp where your tour began.
While you need to be able to 2-3 hours on an uneven surface, the tour requires no prior experience or skills. Your guide will teach you the basics in glacier travelling before starting the walk, and he will choose a safe route for you to follow.
Ice caves are a natural phenomena and the conditions can change depending on weather. Your safety is our first priority so sometimes our tours may be cancelled with short notice due to weather conditions or safety concerns. If this happens, we will always do our best to offer you an alternative tour, if weather permits.
