About

Journey from Reykjavík and explore Iceland's famous South Coast. Stop to explore and take pictures at Skogafoss & Seljandsfoss, Ice Climb on Solheimajökull.

We know ice climbing is for everyone. With combined experience of years in the glacier industry and and literally thousands of glacier hikes, we have developed a unique ice climbing program that will allow even those who have never climbed before, to climb amongst the beautiful blue ice walls.

Our day will start with a basic introduction to how to walk on ice and a basic climbing technique called front pointing. We will combine these two two techniques and with a very mellow ice climbing wall, we will put those skills to the test. Once you are confident, we will progress to different walls which offer various challenges until you are totally satisfied.

Meeting with your Guide

Depart from Reykjavik at 9:00am. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel and start your adventure towards Iceland’s famous South Coast.

Hiker at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss

The first stop on our tour is the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. During most of the year, you can walk behind the waterfall into a cave for a view from the back and the sides. The surrounding area is also home to a variety of plant life, including moss, wildflowers, and ferns that add to its majesty. Bring a rain jacket because this waterfall by far has the most spray.

Skogafoss

Next up on the South Coast Captured adventure is the mighty Skogafoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, with a drop of over 60 meters. Feel the power of this waterfall close up. The mist from the falls can create a beautiful display of rainbows on sunny days if you’re lucky. If you want a workout, climb up a nearby staircase to get a bird’s-eye view of the waterfall and surrounding landscapes.

Hike to Solheimajokull Glacier for your Ice Climb

Your Ice Climbing from Reykjavik adventure embarks on a short 30-minute hike to the face of the Solheimajokull Glacier, where you can marvel at the sparkling blue ice and rugged glacial landscapes. Witness what happens when a glacier exists underneath Katla, Iceland’s largest active volcano. Your guide will share some interesting facts about the glacier’s formation, its importance to Iceland’s ecosystem, and how it has changed throughout the years.

Gearing Up

Upon arriving at the edge of the glacier, your guide will help you put on your crampons for your Ice Climbing from Reykjavik tour. After your guide instructs you on how to put them on, your guide will go over a safety briefing about walking on the glacier. It’s important to understand and follow these rules and to ask any questions that you may have before stepping foot on the ice.

Iceland Crevasse Ice Climbing

Intro to Ice Climbing from Reykjavik

If you are brand new to ice climbing, your guide will start by giving a brief introduction to the activity. This includes how to climb with proper form and understanding how to use the equipment properly. If this is the guest’s first experience, we always start with an easier slope and work our way up. Once you understand all of the techniques and feel ready to give it a try, your guide will set up a line and you will begin to take turns scaling the wall.

More Challenging Climbs

Once you have finished the easier pitches or if you have prior experience in ice climbing to skip that part, your guide will lead you to the more challenging walls. These can range from higher walls, massive glacial holes, or overhanging arches depending on what you are comfortable with.

Your guide will always lead you to what they think you can climb after accessing your skills on the beginner walls. If you are ever feeling unable to finish a climb, your guide can easily raise you out of the hole or lower you down from a wall safely so there is never any need to worry. Challenge yourself, do your best, and let the guide take the coolest photos of you in action during your Ice Climbing from Reykjavik adventure!
