About

Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation or meet you at the Volcano Trails HQ. Today you will be driving one of  ISAK´s classic Land Rover Defenders. The Defenders are specially equipped for overland expeditions and will take you to all the some hidden and hard-to-reach places on the way to Landmannalaugar.

You and your companions will be assigned to your cars. Every individual group gets their own private Land Rover Defender to drive. We leave the busy highway for less travelled backroads and fun trails with river crossings and sometimes a bit challenging 4x4 driving.  Landmannalaugar is a truly rare area, both geologically and aesthetically. The dramatic region can be found nestled beside the raven-black Laugahraun lava field, a sweeping expanse of dried magma which originally formed in an eruption in 1477. Landmannalaugar itself is made up of windswept rhyolite mountains, a rock type that creates a full spectrum of dazzling colour. Shades of red, pink, green, blue and golden yellow make for an ethereal location. Landmannalaugar was historically best known for its natural geothermal baths, hence its name the People's Pools. For centuries, it served as an area of shelter and respite for weary travellers who use these soothing springs as a means to relax after tiring excursions. The most popular road leading to Landmannalaugar, Sigölduleið, has such springs, and takes you past multiple stunning natural features, including Bláhylur lake, a magnificent body of water nestled in a dormant volcanic crater.  River crossing, 4x4 trail driving, stunning views and beautiful mountains, all put together in a day-tour to Landmannalaugar.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hjálparfoss

Hjálparfoss is a beautiful, two stepped waterfall that cascades down into a large plunge pool that is surrounded by very unique basalt rock formations.

The surrounding area is called Hjálp or “help” because when people had to travel from the north to the south over the highlands of Iceland they had to travel through the harsh and desolated Sprengisandur route. It was usually very hard to find a place in this desert route to feed the horses and when arriving to the the lush area near Hjálparfoss people thought of it as a help, because finally there was grass for the horses to bite after this long journey.

Day 1: Landmannalaugar

Welcome to Landmannalaugar in Iceland. We will stop here for couple of hours. The guide will offer you a hike up to Brennisteinsalda or the Sulfur Wave. During the hike your are surrounded by nature so peculiar that you would hardly be surprised if you saw an elf running by. The colorful rhyolite mountains and some small hot springs scattered all over close to Brennisteinsalda with a mystical steam rising up from them. When returning to the huts, after about two hours of hiking, there still is enough time to take a bath in the natural pool.

Day 1: Sigöldugljúfur

The magical Sigöldugljúfur canyon has become one of the main instagram spots in Iceland. It is quite an extraordinary natural wonder with its many small spring-fed streams, small ponds, crystal clear waterfalls, colorful vegetation, and fascinating cliffs.
